THE BREED

.

SQUARE MEATERS cattle were developed in the early 1990's for the premium domestic meat trade with an emphasis on a fast growing early maturing breed of cattle with good muscling. This sub type of the Murray Grey breed is best described as a traditional Murray Grey with its Medium frame. Square Meaters are docile easy doing cattle bred for their tenderness, marbling and feed conversion characteristics.

Square Meaters are suited to both the commercial breeder and small acreage farmer who have an interest in the higher returns available within the premium domestic market. The breed is governed by height restrictions and is therefore divided into two classes for registration as stud cattle.

Class A Square Meaters are described as follows:

Bulls must be between 103 and 113 cms at the shoulder at 12 months of age.

Females must be between 100 and 110 cms at the shoulder at 12 months of age.

Class B Square Meaters cattle are those that are either imported from the Murray Grey Herd book or fall outside the height restrictions already mentioned.

Square Meaters bulls are particularly useful in cross breeding programs where a smaller weight calf at birth is required. The Square Meaters new born calf will typically range from 20 Kg to 32 Kg at birth which makes the bulls especially useful when using over first time heifers and are a useful addition to Dairy herds.
